Name: Ellery Francis Wooten Date of Birth: November 9th 1744 Place of Birth: South Kingstown, Rhode Island Place of Residence: South Kingstown, Rhode Island Party: Federalist State & District: Rhode Island at-large Religion: Christian (Episcopal, formerly Anglican)
Son of prominent attorney Robinson B. Wooten and his wife Elisabeth (née Cunhal), Ellery Wooten graduated from Rhode Island College (today's Brown, not to confuse with today's Rhode Island College!) with major in Architecture. Instead of working as an architect, he was a journalist, playwright, and poet. Later, he joined Rhode Island militia and during the Revolutionary War, he was one of its prominent commanders. After the war, he served as mayor of South Kingstown, has unsuccessfully run for Governor of Rhode Island, and then got elected to the House of Representatives.
Considered a radical on many issues, including his opposition to slavery, he is still a very respected figure in Rhode Island.
