All characters can attempt to influence the state legislature when deciding who to elect as the next Governor by posting here. You may write to them or even speak with them if you are from this state.
Currently, Governor *John Eager Howard (F) is being challenged by supporters of +George Plater (I). It is expected that approximately 60 legislators support Plater at this time.

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE LEGISLATORS OF MARYLAND
As the new session of our legislature opens, you are charged with electing the man who will govern our great state through the next year. While I have nothing but good words for George Plater, I write this day to speak on behalf of our able, brave, noble, and steadfast Governor, John Eager Howard. Governor Howard is a man of sound principle, who stands in the annals of our short history alongside such great men as our President, as General Lee, and as others who need no mention. Answering the call of his neighbors, his state, and his fledgling country, Governor Howard left behind a life of comfort to lead men into battle, and was time and again heralded for his bravery. The list of battles at which he served with distinction is the same as those which most secured our liberty: Monmouth, White Plains, and Cowpens. It was for his service, his extraordinary bravery, and his courage in the face of an insurmountable enemy at Cowpens that Congress overwhelmingly voted to honor him and record his name in our history with the awarding of a rare Congressional medal. A lesser man would have been content to retire on these laurels, but not so our brave Governor. He continued to lead our troops in securing liberty, spilling his own blood on the field of battle when assaulted with a bayonet.
These same principles of bravery and courage have made him a great steward of our state in his terms as our chief executive. Let him have a fourth year in office, one in which he can continue to guarantee peace, order, and the good governance that only a man of military bearing, heroism, and leadership may bring to Maryland. From the Alleghenies to the Chesapeake, from my beloved St. Mary's to the shores of Baltimore, Maryland calls out for one man's vision for her future, and that man is our Governor, John Eager Howard. Return him to office, and let our state continue to flourish yet one more year.
Sincerely yours, Ethan Mulready, Member for St Mary's, St Charles, and the South

Visiting various legislators at their Maryland offices privately, here is the thrust of the conversation idea and tone:
I am here today to advocate for the election of John Eager Howard as our Governor. He needs no introduction. He has been our Governor. He served as one of our delegates to the Continental Congress. He is a man of bravery and honor. He is a sturdy and reliable Freemason. He is a man of competence and ability, as has been demonstrated throughout our nation's short history.
Our President, General George Washington, wanted to select John Eager Howard to be his Secretary of War. If Governor Howard would have been of enough soundness to serve as General Washington's Secretary, how can we reject his service as Governor?
We should select John Howard as our Governor as he would have been capable in the President's cabinet.

Gentlemen,
I know that you are currently contemplating who should be the next Governor of the fine state of Maryland. While I do not hail from Maryland, I have known the reputation of Senator Charles Carroll for a long time and I know that he is a man of fine reputation, impeccable character and committed service. I also know that Senator Carroll is currently your United States Senator, but I would suggest to you that a man of his caliber, his skills and excellence should be in the Governor’s mansion, leading the people directly. I know that under his guidance Maryland would enter a golden age.
That is not to besmirch the reputation of Governor Howard, a man I hold in highest esteem. Governor Howard should enter the federal service as President Washington, and I think that this is something best accomplished by assuring him that the people of Maryland would be in fine hands – that is, the hands of Senator Charles Carroll.

Speaking before legislators at a local Federalist-leaning drinking establishment (Steward provided the drink)
"I have heard rumors, and a state delegate to our state legislature has been kind enough to show me a copy confirming its existence, that Gordon Battle Hughes has been sending letters to you all, encouraging you to vote against our good Governor so that in the next election you might all vote for Senator Carroll to become Governor. I am mildly appalled at the suggestion, although in my short time in the Capitol one might come to expect this sort of thing from Mr. Hughes, he being a man of some wit and cunning.
As I said, this is mildly appalling and his suggestion should be rejected utterly. This idea of plot and office-trading is the sort of thing that the people find most detestable and vain-glorious in elected office holders. If you reject Governor Howard, let it be because you find his work to be inadequate or because you believe he is incapable of the task. Do not reject him for the sake of some future favor-trading. It is beneath the dignity of both Governor Howard and Senator Carroll, as well as beneath the dignity of those casting the votes for Governor.
Reject him if you believe the Governor is incapable. Yet, I have not heard such things from many delegates. I have simply heard that the challenger is a bit more in line with some delegates' views. Well, as even Mr. Hughes attests, the Governor is held in the highest esteem. The Governor is capable and earnest. If we hold him in that high esteem then you should honor him by casting your votes in his favor."

To the State Legislature of the State of Maryland,
I hope this correspondence finds you gentlemen in good health and fortune. Soon you will have to choose the next governor of the State of Maryland, as the elections are nigh, having to decide between two good men, our Governor John Eager Howard and George Plater. Although many of you have very passionate ideals regarding who to select, I implore to remember this, you would not be here selecting the governor to serve the American people if it were not for men like our governor who fought bravely in the War of Independence.
He put his life at risk in the Battle of Cowpens and even received recognition for the valor, honor, and bravery he displayed. We, the American people, owe to him, and others like him that the United States now has her freedom from the British Monarchy. It is in this, that we know, our good Governor continues to hold, til this day, as a public servant, the very principles that he demonstrated on the battlefield. He won us our freedom, and through his policies, the State of Maryland will only see greater prosperity in the future, so let us, win him this election.
Sincerely yours, Pierre Broussard
