All characters can attempt to influence the state legislature by writing or even speaking with them in this thread.
With the incumbent having recently deceased, the legislature is considering +John Walker (F) and *James Monroe (R). It is expected that around 75 legislators support Monroe at this point.

My dearest State Legislators,
I humbly write to each and every one of you to call on you to support James Monroe as he seeks to become a Senator for our great state. Mr. Monroe has fought bravely for Virginia in recent years. He wishes to continue his business at Federal Hall on behalf of myself and all other Virginians.
I pledge my full support to Mr. Monroe and I pray to our Heavenly Father that he can count on yours as well. Virginia needs someone who will stand up for our rights as a State, and Mr. Monroe is exactly that man. Consider this proposal with the clearest of minds, and the calmest of hearts. May God bless you my friends.
Yours in hope,
Thomas Cole

To the honorable members of the legislature of the Commonwealth of Virginia,
It is my distinct pleasure to write to you all today on behalf of a colleague and friend of mine, John Walker. I know that as you consider the next Senator from the great Commonwealth of Virginia that there are many factors to consider, chief among them a strong background. As an aide to our President, George Washington, Mr. Walker was instrumental in ensuring that the then-General Washington could ensure victory for our forces, ensure that allies joined us in our fight for freedom. He served Virginia admirably in the Continental Congress, and his knowledge of the law and legal procedures make him unparalleled for the position given his deep understanding of issues facing Virginia and how this young Republic can become an effective player on the world stage.
But there is an additional issue to consider: one of debts. Leaders like George Washington, like myself, and like John Walker understand that Virginia should be appropriately reimbursed for the expenses that it took on during our great War for Independence. Virginia fought with and for these united States, and it is my humble opinion, like Walker's, that these united States should be there for them. It is why in Washington we have pushed for passage of legislation that would assume the debts, giving Virginia the money it needs for its own purposes and to ensure a better standard of living for its citizens.
However, I can say full well that Mr. Monroe, for his strengths of character, lacks this clear understanding of the issue. Fellow men who have taken the mantle of "Republicans," in opposition to George Washington and his Administration, fought in Congress to ensure that Virginia's debt remains unpaid, leaving it to the legislature to raise taxes and other duties to pay its own debt. The rationale is that "Virginia needs to learn its lesson," and this is a refrain that has been echoed by all members of this Republican stripe in Washington. That is not what Virginia needs.
These same Republicans have challenged the Constitutional provision that awards representation on the basis of population, saying that the slaves which count as 3/5ths of a person is invalid. These Republicans seek to invalidate the very provisions that allow Virginia the strong voice she deserves in Washington- and with a Senator Monroe, you can be sure that these Republicans will get their way. They'll push for an indebted Virginia and a Virginia that is powerless in our Congress. Virginia, I believe, does not deserve that end that it would get with a Senator Monroe.
That is why I ask that you consider strongly John Walker as the next Senator from the Commonwealth of Virginia. He is strong, and will be a voice to ensure that Virginia has everything that it deserves as one of the strongest and most valiant member of these united States. It is my hope that you will choose him to represent this state so that Virginia has the rights- as well as the privileges- it deserves. I hope to speak to you again, and to visit the capital of Virginia in the near future. Your state is a beautiful one, and it deserves the best it can get in the leadership of a Senator John Walker.
With warmest regards, I am,
/s/ Andrew Beaumont Representative of South Carolina Loyal servant of these united States.

Distinguished members of the Legislature of Virginia,
Today I again call on you to ignore outside voices from South Carolina who wish to manipulate the decisions of the men of Virginia. With that said I believe that James Monroe is the only choice in this decision to replace the recently deceased. James Monroe has demonstrated great love and dedication to Virginia. James Monroe understands that we didn't fight our War of Independence to throw off the shackles of tyranny of Britain only to wear them under a new owner that is the Federalist Party. James Monroe is a fighter of Liberty, a scholar of the Constitution, and above all else a steward of Virginia.
Your fellow Virginian ,
Elijah Surratt, Congressman of the Virginia 3rd.

To the honorable members of the legislature of the Commonwealth of Virginia,
I hope this missive finds you well. I understand that there may be many now that are questioning why a humble Representative from South Carolina would have interests in Virginia. And while it is true that I am unfortunately not a native son of Virginia, so many leaders of this young Republic have come from Virginia's fertile lands to make me wish that I could be a part of the Commonwealth's great story.
I write today on behalf of Federalist candidates, including John Walker who I know has served the Commonwealth well throughout his years and who will be an able and active representative as the next Senator of Virginia. Our President, George Washington, hailed from Virginia, as have so many impressive men whose intelligence and willingness to move towards greater liberty gave us the country we have today. And I can say that our President needs allies like Mr. Walker working with him in the national capital as we tackle the important questions on foreign conflicts such as the current unpleasantness in France (and I can say that we are all pushing for neutrality- while France was a steadfast ally in our War for Independence, it is the right of the people to overthrow those governments which are no longer legitimate) to those with the Indian tribes. We need a man like Mr. Walker who will be an ally to George Washington and to Virginia as we discuss how to build a more prosperous nation built on the freer trade that benefits the agricultural economy that has made Virginia the strong state that it is today.
But I can say that even if we all ascribe to the label of Federalist, we do not follow a central plan or central marching orders. We understand that what works for Virginia will not be what works for New York, and we will not enforce unity. You cannot say the same of the National Democrats, that have already put out a national plan that includes allowing all men to vote, nor the Republicans, who are busy developing their own national plan that will require states to compete to enter the union, that will require states to carry their own debt from the War for Independence, or that will require that the people- all people- vote on every initiative that comes through the Congress. And they want this regardless of whether that is good for Virginia or not.
This is why Virginia needs Walker. And this is why, as someone who longs to be an adopted son of Virginia, I cannot help but support a smart, talented, experienced, and most importantly confident man like John Walker for Senate.
With warmest regards, I am,
/s/ Andrew Beaumont Representative of South Carolina Loyal servant of these united States.

To the honorable members of the legislature of the Commonwealth of Virginia,
As the time grows near to when the legislature will choose its next Senator, I hope to reach out to you for a final time to inform you of the importance of the choice that you will be making for the coming years. While both John Walker and James Monroe are honorable men who have served the Commonwealth and our united States well through the tumultuous years that led us finally to an independent Republic, it is my fear and the fear of many rational men throughout these united States that we are in danger of losing that which we worked so hard to create.
I speak not necessarily of James Monroe, but his allies in the so-called "Republican" faction that are crafting a central platform that Monroe will have no choice but to follow if elected. We saw, during my time in Congress, that which the Republicans were advocating: an end to our Republic by ensuring that individuals, land-owners and not, men and women, free and slave, would vote freely in a democratic manner on such important issues as the Federal budget. Such proposals will mean every matter of national importance will be voted on by all people. Issues such as tariffs. Such as whether to continue to allow slavery to continue at all. To allow these policies to go to a vote is, you all can agree, a threat to our Republic.
And what does this mean for the legislatures themselves? How long before the people demand direct election of Senators? Direct say over the operations of a state or, worse, abolition of the states themselves? While this may not be the demands of the honorable Mr. Monroe, those are the end goals of his masters who will dictate policy through him if chosen. This is not good for our Republic, and it is not good for Virginia.
This is why Virginia needs John Walker. And this is why, as someone who longs to be an adopted son of Virginia, I cannot help but support a an experienced, honest, and free-thinking man like John Walker for Senate.
With warmest regards, I am,
/s/ Andrew Beaumont Representative of South Carolina Loyal servant of these united States.

Walker: 35 Monroe: 65
Voted along party lines in the legislature while splitting the independents (See State Laws thread). Higher quality for Beaumont canceled out by homestate advantage with Surratt and Cole.
