Jean Surratt, the younger brother of Elijah Surratt and second heir to Mon Surratt, grew up in Montpellier France. At the age of 18 he immediately joined his brother under command of General Washington in New Jersey of 1777 shortly after the battle of Trenton. Jean would eventually take over Elijah's command after it was apparent he wouldn't be returning to the battlefield. Out of the shadow of his brother he was able to succeed and excel as line infantry commander. While Elijah would only attain the rank of Major in the Continental Army, Jean would reach Full Colonel at the age of 22 in 1781.
As the war winded down Jean would return to his brother's side as Elijah's wound healed. Jean would take direct control over "Surratt Plantation", and would eventually start a daily local paper. With his brother's health returned, his paper was his first priority. After a few months of success the printing press company that Jean had relied on went out of business. He enjoyed writing so much he packed up and moved down to Newbern, North Carolina.
In Newbern he became a beat writer for the NC State Gazette in 1788. His success grew further becoming a deputy editor for Southern Agriculture and Commerce.
