Military Service: Served as an officer for the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. Hill largely participated in conflicts in the Southern theater, particularly in both Georgia and South Carolina, serving under the leadership of Brigadier General Francis Marion. Despite lacking any prior military experience, Hill adapted quickly to the humidity of the South and learnt to the ways of unconventional tactics by his mentor. He was revered by his men for his tenacity and courage, as he was often seen leading from the front during raids and ambushes. By war's end, Hill had served as a Lieutenant-Colonel with an entire battalion under his command.
Post War: Following the Revolutionary War, Hill chose to remain in the deep south instead of returning to his native Virginia. Hill won election to the Georgia State Assembly, and was a prominent member, notably serving as mediator between the Cherokee and settlers, as well as leading survey expeditions westwards of the original colony territories. After the establishment of the first Congress, Hill won election to serve as Representative of Georgia's first district in the new Republic.
