Spring 1789 Very sad to see my friend Samuel Jay leave the Democratic-Republican Party particularly over the issue of slavery. It is not an issue he should be dealing with, it is an issue that must be kept to the states. They have an inherent right to decide what happens within their borders. Mr. Jay sought to get rid of that guarantee and that is very troubling to me. I felt compelled to answer his editorial in the Kentucky Gazette. Many hopes that this is not the start of a larger trend.

Spring 1789-Elected House Leader of the Democratic-Republican Party in Congress. Very excited to begin this new journey. I am leading an able and willing band of men who are ready to fight for the liberties and freedoms so important to our nation. Very excited for this first session of the United States Congress.

Spring 1789-Very concerned about these Seminole attacks in Georgia. It represents a grave threat to thousands of men, women, and children. However, I firmly believe that is up to the militias of Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina to deal with this issue. A standing army represents a grave threat to our national sovereignty and the will of the people. I do wish, however, that President Washington would make a public statement on this issue.

Spring 1789-Sponsored my first bill the Copyright Protection Act. No one who is willing to put their time and intelligence into making the world a better place should ever have their hard work stolen. Very much looking forward to seeing this bill come up for debate.

Spring 1789-I support a Bill of Rights. I believe that without it it is too easy for the forces of tyranny to wiggle their way into our national Constitution. I believe that we need to protect free speech in particular. No man should be barred from expressing his opinion. Very lively debate in the House right now.

Spring 1789- Vermont should be a state. We should look favorably upon establishing new states in our Republic. With the land issues between Vermont and New York being satisfied I am satisfied that we should move forward with this. However, I strongly support keeping the number of slave and free states equal. Hopefully we can come to some sort of compromise.

Spring 1789-I believe strongly that the states have inherent powers. Yes, we have formed a union, but that union does not supersede the rights of the states, but rather comes out of the freedom found in the many states. We must check the growing centralization of power into one form of government. It is important that we stand for liberty in opposition to tyranny.

Spring 1789-Today I stood in opposition to the current Census Act. This legislation would simply give a blank check to the Executive. And while President Washington is a good man, what would happen if a not so good man were to occupy that office? It is a matter of checking the powers that be and this bill does not have adequate provisions to be properly supported at this time.
