NEVER FORGiVE, NEVER FORGET By: Samuel Jay (R-NH)
It seems many in this nation are already losing their memory of a time not long ago when we fought for our freedom from the tyrannical reign of England. Gaining our freedom is in large part due to French involvement shall we never forget the names like La Fayette, Rochambeau and Grasse, French names who without their help we could still be fighting England today. It seems people are too keen to overlook our French brothers in place for a friendship with England. Tell me now brothers what has the United Kingdom done to earn your loyalty? Outrageous taxes, the taking and quartering of your own land and for this you call them friends and brothers. They are not my brother nor are they yours. We fought a seven years war to break our ties from them let us not forget that.
How many of you fought as I did alongside names like Ethan Allen and Samuel Adams true patriots who gave their true measure of devotion to the cause of independence. Now is the time we thank France for their support and not return to the tyrannical reign of England who forced our hand with acts such as the Sugar Act, the Stamp Act, Tea Act and let us not forget those men who lost their lives in the Boston Massacre.
I ask you to cease supporting England and begin supporting France let us not forgive England for firing upon us in Lexington and Concord let us never forget the struggle and the many great men who died to bring us our freedom. The English are no friend to America and in turn America must never be a friend to England.

OUR NEW NATION MUST AVOID HOSTILITY, by Gordon Battle Hughes
“Recent talk of our need to forge strong, specific alliances in Europe have reached my ears, and I must admit that this is something that concerns me. I agree with many of so-called ‘Republican’ colleagues that we must maintain positive ties with France due to their assistance in our Revolution, but I also agree with my ‘Federalist’ colleagues that we should approach the British in the name of friendship and reconciliation.
I would propose that we, as a new nation, should not dedicate ourselves to promoting the cause of the French government or the British government, and instead we should work to promote the cause of our citizens. That cause is not war, or hostility or involvement in Europe: it is a commitment to the kind of foreign policy that encourages peace, stability and trade.
There is no benefit in abandoning the French, and there is no benefit in courting new hostilities with the British. A sensible, balanced, moderate and peaceful policy will move us forward and secure wealth, prosperity and happiness. I know that, for many, the wounds of this past war are still deep; I am not calling for sheepishness in regards to the British, just a recognition that living in peace, left to our own devices was the goal of our Revolution, and I do not see how refusing to so much as live and trade in peace with the British is conducive to that goal.
We have our freedom, our liberty and our sovereignty. Enough blood has been shed, enough hate has been spewed and enough brothers, sons and fathers have been killed. Now is the time to rest, to look towards the future and understand that renewed hostility is not something to be sought but avoided when possible.”

SUPPORT FOR A STRONGER CENTRAL GOVERNMENT, by Albert Hannover
"As of recently, it has arisen to my attention that many states and many citizens of these states, still recognize the Federal Government as a Confederation rather than a Central Body, that the link supersedes the chain. Although a chain is only as strong as its weakest link, the chain only works united and cooperative, not divided and conflicting.
We must recognize that we are no longer divided by a government across an ocean, we are no longer governed by a monarch and a parliament, but by a President and a Congress which we, Americans, choose.
We must recognize that I am not a Massachusetian, and you are not a Virginian, or a New Yorker, but that we are American, citizens of the freest nation on Earth.
Together, united under one banner and not 13, we will find strength, liberty, and justice. We will build this house from the ground up, and it will be stronger than the sum of its parts. Will you join me in making these United States not only free, but strong?

'Opposing Ideas of Federalism,' by Gordon Battle Hughes
"Since the crafting of our Constitution there has been a national fear that factions have developed and that they, more than any personal effort, will determine the fate of this country. I have been affiliated, not by myself but by others, with the so-called ‘Federalist’ faction because I favor a strong federal government and trust in the wise, judicious leadership of General Washington. Despite this label, I am afraid of the mentality that has been expressed by those who share this label.
I am fearful that some of those who have been called ‘Federalist’ are little more than potential tyrants masquerading as freedom-loving patriots, just as I am certain that some of those who have been called ‘Republican’ will happily become tyrants should they ever replace General Washington as President.
I believe in a federal government, yes – a strong federal government. I think it must play a vital role in public life. But I believe that this federal government must respect the bounds of the Constitution and the collective will of the citizens of this republic. I will not surrender my autonomy anymore than I expect the citizens of New Hampshire or Massachusetts or New York to surrender their autonomy. That was not our agreement, and that is not what we shall have.
What we shall have is an institution to guide our futures, to facilitate our working together for the collective betterment of our citizenry. To forge a common cause and a common people, bound by the ideas of liberty and human dignity. If that is federalism, then I am a ‘Federalist; if that is not federalism, then I am not a ‘Federalist.’
A strong federal government does not and should not mean that we must surrender our identities as citizens of our home states. A strong federal government should mean that we have the opportunity to labor together, struggle together and enjoy the fruits of freedom together. It should not be a negative thing that destroys our old ties, but a positive thing that builds new ones. That is what I want, that is what this country needs and that was the agreement we made when we accepted the Constitution."

"Patriotism to a New Country", by Dr. Orison Pratt
For our new, fledgling nation to join the ranks of the great civilizations of history, some shared conceptualisation of patriotism, some form of common national loyalty, is needed. We are left with a most vexing question: is patriotism possible to a new country? We lack a common national identity, and the federal government, quite rightfully, looks unlikely to impose some certain subjective values, religious beliefs, and artistic concepts on us all as mandatory. We lack even a common idea of what our country actually is: is it a single entity with states being subservient to national governmental interests, or are we seven independent entities organised under one banner solely for short-term strength? Are we defined predominantly by our allegiance to our state capitals or to our national capitals? These are unsettled, controversial, and agitative questions.
Is it possible to be a patriot to a country without a single coherent identity? My instinct says no. Patriotism is, at its core, a subcategory of loyalty. My instinct informs me that loyalty is not possible without one true, identifiable, consistent entity to swear such loyalty to. This reasoning leads me to believe that patriotism to America is impossible - the federal system means we lack a strong central authority to pledge allegiance to, if the wishes of the anti-federalists come into fruition, and the lack of a dominant cultural mindset, imposed either by government or natural societal forces, means there is no coherent identity worthy of our fealty either. Is patriotism to America thus impossible?
This controversial, cynical mindset was one I had succumbed to over the past few days of thought and reflection, but I have since realised that patriotism properly understood, patriotism worth fighting for, is not loyalty to a country. Those patriots who ignore politics are not ideologically patriots at all, they just have understandably stronger emotional and moral attachments to those within their country, or a stronger sentimental attachment to their place of birth; it is a communitarian and familial loyalty, masked as a nationalist one for convenience's sake. It is ignorant of the bigger picture but fuelled by a communitarian, familial instinct that is humanity's greatest asset.
This form of patriotism, which I shall refer to as communitarian patriotism, or familial patriotism, is a virtue. It entails a recognition of the increased ease and effectiveness of helping those close to us, of fighting for what is right closer to him and promoting our ideals by setting an example domestically before actively championing them elsewhere. It recognises that a man's greatest duty on Earth is to his family and friends. It recognises that the accomplishment of this goal can only be achieved by ensuring mutual prosperity and security for strangers, creating a strong world for our own loved ones to prosper in. It recognises that this security and prosperity for strangers carries the best impact on our own lives when achieved closer to home, that our resources for helping others in creating a better habitat are finite, and that prioritisation of charity is needed. It recognises nationalities providing an admittedly arbitrary but fundamentally effective and easily-identifiable measure for assisting in this prioritisation of charity.
But it is not true patriotism; communitarian patriotism treats country as a means to an end, true patriotism requires viewing the country's success as an end. The question is then, how do we define true patriotism exactly, how do we determine whether an individual is a communitarian patriot or a true patriot? True patriotism is admiration, love, and passion for a country's principles. In noble men, this form of patriotism properly understood can only be found in countries that value freedom over autocracy, equality over domination, justice over arbitrariness. In those countries that lack those values, a noble man can only be patriotic in the sense that they love their communities and families and wish them the best, and wish to create a better home and stable future for them. Noble men in ignoble countries can be communitarian patriots, but cannot be true patriots for that would require a loyalty to ignoble causes. In arbitrary and illiberal nations, patriotism in the sense of loving a country's values, true patriotism, is merely the refuge of the scoundrel. True patriotism as a concept, love for a country's values, is neither inherently a vice or a virtue, but a character trait of moral standing based solely on said country's values. To judge whether a man who is a true patriot is a noble soul, we must first judge his country's values.
I propose a third type of patriotism, in addition to the communitarian and true varieties. It is an extrapolation of sorts of the two types. It subscribes to the communitarian idea of a nationality as the best means for prioritising charity and taking care of one's loved ones. It accepts the insights of true patriotism in the sense that it places importance on the values of said country. This form of patriotism, while by no means unique, shall be named American patriotism. We must, for the interests of both the American individual and the American whole, create a national identity, and it must be one defined by our values. True patriotism is an important building block for a strong nation.
What is vital for a strong nation, however, is ensuring the values our people are loyal to are noble ones. It is the duty of every American patriot to recognise we are in the most important period of our national history; regardless of whether our nation lasts two thousand years or two thousand days, these next few weeks will be the most significant. They will be by far the most significant days in our history when it comes to shaping our national values, and we have a moral obligation to our descendants, and humanity as a whole, to ensure the values we adopt are noble ones. The duty of a patriot is to make sure America is a nation worth being loyal to, or else any blood spilled in its name will be in vain.
So what values should the American patriot champion? Freedom over slavery. Unity over conflict. Liberty over autocracy. Equality over domination. We must make a nation worthy of patriotism, a nation deserving of unconditional love, a nation that will elicit loyalty and admiration from its citizens, a nation that will serve as a template for others to follow.

A SHORT EDITORIAL IN FAVOR OF A STANDING ARMY William Charles Bathurst
‘I have expended my youth in the service of the British military and, since our justifiable Revolution, in the service of the state of New Hampshire. Now that I hear our southern borders have been violated by the Seminole Indians, it has become clear to me that the only way for our nation to provide for the security of its citizens is for us to create a national, standing army.
Recent editorials in this paper have argued that we must fight the British, or that we must express concern about happenings in France, or some other concern about the Europeans. The Europeans are not the real threat; the real threat is the enemy here at home, the violent natives that I have fought far more regularly than I have fought the French or the British and who fight with a ferocity and inhumanity that is difficult to describe.
We must move against the Seminoles; in the same vein, we must put down those northern tribes that are presently at war with our Republic. I pledge my blood to the task, and I ask that my fellow citizen pledge to support our new nation in the establishment of a standing army.’

The Search For Samuel Jay Jacob Jay
As soon as we've read about my father Samuel Jay's attempt to kill President Washington my cousin David Lee and the Vermont militia went straight to work to try to track down Samuel Jay and take him in for questioning however when the Militia and David Lee got to Samuels residence everything of value has been removed and they followed a horse trail for ten miles before the trail disappeared.
I urge my father to report himself to the Vermont Militia to stand for himself to answer to charges laid against him and to provide for his own defense. I can tell you that nobody in our family have heard about a Dagger Club or a plot to kill President Washington and if these accusations are true we will support the letter of the law and assist in any way to make sure he stands trial to account for his actions. As for right now I am moving up to Vermont after coming from Philadelphia to assist in the search. I however believed it was our duty to report on the facts as we know them and to lend our support in bringing my father, Samuel Jay to justice so that he can receive a fair trial and see that whatever the truth may be that it comes out into the open.

Straw poll for Vermont special election:
Who will you vote for in the Vermont 1st Congressional District special election? David Lee (Federalist): 40% ~Roger B. Turpin (Republican): 40% +Israel Smith (Independent): 20%
Who will you vote for in the Vermont 2nd Congressional District special election? +Nathaniel Niles (Republican): 70% ~Thomas Howard (Independent): 30%
Remember that Vermont requires a majority to be elected, not merely a plurality.

The Right Choice For Vermont By: David Lee
Fellow Green Mountaineers I address you today to tell you why I believe I am the right choice for Vermont in the 1st Congressional District. While my election plans have been halted by trying to bring Samuel Jay to justice I believe it is time to address the people of Vermont. I am a proud member of the New England caucus and am working with many great men both Federalist and Republican on important issues to New England I've also introduced a bill to end debtors prison and free patriots from jail as I believe the last thing we should do is put persons in prison because they were too busy fighting for our freedom to concern themselves with debt at that time.
I will work on keeping Vermont a strong and vital state and create the opportunities we wanted so much from our Statehood in the United States.. I will support a balanced army supported by our militia's and I will support new freedoms including a strong Judicial system to defend our constitution and the rights given within.
We need to make a choice Vermont in who we want to represent our values. My values are simple I stand for our constitutional and god given rights to freedom, life, liberty and property. Now is not the time to abandon those values Vermont.
