Elihu Enoch Raines
Born 1769 to a poor family in Manchester, New Hampshire, Elihu Enoch Raines was too young to serve in the Revolution. Although too poor to afford a formal education, Enoch (as he preferred to be called) displayed a razor-sharp intelligence from a young age and, in 1785, became acquainted with Gordon Battle Hughes, who was just then reestablishing his father’s merchant business. Recognizing the young man’s potential, he was rapidly promoted through the ranks of the company and became something of a junior partner and personal assistant to Hughes.
After Hughes’ election to Congress, Raines took an even greater role in administrating Hughes’ family business. As of 1789, he has expressed an interest in expanding it into the newspaper business.
