Like his older brother Albert, Jacob was born in Berlin and quickly Anglicized when his family moved to London. Unlike his brother however, he did not develop a hatred for the monarchy, he was more content with the situation. Joining the Prussia War College alongside his brother, he was under scrutiny after his brother abandoned the army, and it delayed his advancement of the ranks. Jacob was stationed in Hamburg at the time of the revolution. When his service time expired in 1782, he made the choice to move to America to be involved in the Republican experiment.
While not running for Congress, he has advocated in both Prussia and in America for the advancement of Prussian-American relations, citing that Prussia could be a valuable ally and trading partner in the future.
