1789:
I have been graciously given the duty my state and my country in congress. It is a matter I do not take lightly. President Washington will take office soon and the government of the United States shall commence operation. It's not much as of yet, but through strong leadership I am certain that our government will tale the right path to assuring it's citizens future prosperity. I shall be pushing for the creation of a bank much like that of the Bank of England to help move towards a national currency. But first, our government itself must take shape and my efforts shall be focused on pushing important administrative legislation.

It is my personal fear that allowing a president too long a time of service is a blight on democracy. No disrespect to President Washington of course. We must remain vigilant to protect the rights of the common man and I believe a huge flaw was not limiting the amount of time a president is allowed to serve. Besides, a breath of fresh air and new ideas can circulate more robustly should a new man enter the Presidency. To act on my feelings, I have moved to amend the bill of rights which I support to limit the terms of President to just one.

We have quickly found ourselves embroiled in a vigorous debate over a bill which, I believe frankly does not need one. The Bill of Rights is well intentioned and delegates powers to the states which are not given to congress in the constitution. I share concerns that enumerated rights may lead to confusion that they may be the only ones. But the ninth and tenth amendments fix that problem for now.

I voted against the amendment to the census act regarding representation of slaves for two reasons. One, I believe the good people to be put in charge of the census shall be capable of doing their duties to the letter regarding the constitution. Two, because personally, I oppose the institution of slavery itself. I believe that it's existence in this country is the ultimate hypocrisy for the land of the free.
