Born to Richard and Maria Bessett. After Richard resolved to find an education for himself and travel the world, his wife Maria sought to see Thomas was given a proper upbringing. Funded by her family's own trading profits, Maria found a modest life in New York and an education for the young Thomas. When Richard returned, he moved with his parents to Philadelphia, where he was always following on the heels of his father, soaking in the life of a budding statesman.
Thomas attended the College of William and Mary, and when he returned to Philadelphia in 1788, he had developed a deep interest in history and journalism.
